GEORGE WASHINGTON HIGH SCHOOL 1955 REUNION

Our fifty year reunion is now in the history books. The gala event was held on Saturday, April 23rd at the Long Beach Hyatt Regency. The Hyatt provided us with the Beacon Ballroom which is on the fourth floor, overlooking Long Beach's beautiful Rainbow Harbor with the Queen Mary lighted at night across the channel. The 157 classmates and their guests were greeted by Arlene Platt and Betty Lundeen for the Valiants. Conquistadores were greeted by Gerry Valenta and Kay Faubion. All classmates were presented with name tags with their photo from the 1955 Continental, compliments of Gerry. So eager were our classmates to begin the evening's festivities, the Hyatt opened the Beacon's Rotunda (where the reception was held) earlier than planned. During the "Geritol Hour", Bob Armstrong and Craig Evans entertained us with their still wonderful, piano skills. After dinner, Bob Carroll provided us with background music from his daily radio show in Reno. Bob brought several "oldies" that were popular when we were at George Washington.

Attendees were served citrus-bibb salad followed by Napa Ranch chicken served with seasonal vegetables. Most everyone could not resist the Tiramisu. The tables were draped with white linen. In true George Washington style, the Hyatt used napkins of royal blue and red. Shimmering silver and purple (which is red and blue) mylar centerpieces covered with 50's graced each table.

In his opening remarks, Paul White stated that a sad part of the reunion is that so many of our classmates are deceased. With 2/3 of our class still on the "Lost List", it is impossible to have an accurate count of who is deceased. Therefore, rather than pass out a list or post a bulletin board, the committee decided to honor all deceased classmates (known to us or not) in a special manner. Bob Armstrong played his rendition of the song UNFORGETTABLE while we were in silence as a tribute to all of our deceased classmates.

Paul warned those in attendance not to go by Washington on their way home after the reunion, due to the high rate of crime in that area. Instead, he suggested that we should reminisce about our days at Washington. Bob Armstrong gave us an outstanding presentation in recalling those years spent on Denker Avenue.

In the committee's previous letter, we stated that at the reunion we would have a list of email or street addresses. However, this was set aside as Chuck Herget (at his cost) set up our very own 1955 Reunion web site. At the reunion, Chuck explained how it works. The public web site is: www.gwhs1955.org where anyone can view the site. Our PRIVATE web site is: www.gwhs1955.org/GWHSsecure. which is a secure web site. The private web site contains addresses and phone numbers of classmates who want to make them available to other members of the class. A user name and password are required to access the private web site. To obtain the user name and password, enter your name and email address in the class registry entry on the public web site. Your name and email will not be displayed on the public web site. After your name is verified as being from our class, you will be sent the user name and password.

Judging by the comments on Saturday, as well as later correspondence, our fifty year reunion was a great success. Please stay in contact with other classmates through our web site.

The reunion committee.
